Underground Telecommunications Conduit: Planning Guide

Underground conduit is the part of the job you only get one chance to do well. Here is what to think about before the trench is backfilled.

Underground conduit protects telecommunications cabling from moisture, rodents, ground movement and future digging. It also lets cables be replaced or upgraded without re-trenching.

Things to think about before the trench closes

  • Adequate conduit size for the intended cable, plus room to pull spares.
  • Sensible depth — deep enough to be safe from garden work and future landscaping.
  • Draw strings left in place so future cables can be pulled through.
  • Sweeps rather than tight bends at direction changes.
  • Separation from power and other services per applicable installation practice.

Common use cases

  • Lead-in from the street pit to the property boundary or house.
  • Between a house and a detached studio, granny flat or shed.
  • Across driveways where later access will be difficult.

Note: Specific depth, separation and marker-tape requirements vary by location and cable type. Confirm with a registered cabler for your job.
