What you need to know before you book
Structured cabling explained in plain English
Structured cabling is the permanent wired backbone of a property. Instead of running one long cable each time a device needs a connection, every outlet is run back to a single central point — usually a patch panel inside a communications cabinet. From there, short patch leads connect each outlet to your switch, router or NBN equipment. It is the same approach used in commercial buildings, scaled down to suit a house, home office, clinic or small tenancy.
The advantage is flexibility. When a desk moves, a TV wall changes or you swap network hardware, the permanent cabling stays where it is and only the patch leads change. Every run is labelled at both ends, so a fault can be isolated in minutes rather than traced through a ceiling. It also removes the reliance on Wi-Fi for the devices that punish it most — 4K streaming boxes, gaming consoles, desktop PCs, VoIP handsets, NVRs and point-of-sale terminals.
Cat6 vs Cat6A: choosing the right cable for the job
Cat6 handles 1 Gigabit Ethernet comfortably across a full 100-metre channel and 10 Gigabit over shorter runs of roughly 55 metres in good conditions. Cat6A carries 10 Gigabit across the full channel length and has better shielding against crosstalk, which matters when a dozen cables share the same tray or conduit. For a typical Queensland house with runs under 40 metres, Cat6 is usually the sensible spend. For a two-storey home, an office fit-out, a run to a detached studio or anywhere you expect to add cameras and access points later, Cat6A is the safer long-term choice.
The cable is rarely the expensive part of the job — the labour to get it through a roof space, wall cavity or slab-on-ground wall is. That is why we normally recommend installing a little more capacity than you need today: running two cables to a key location while the ceiling is open costs far less than returning to add a second one in two years.

How Queensland homes and premises affect the install
Construction type drives most of the cost. A raised Queenslander gives easy under-floor access and quick, invisible runs. Slab-on-ground brick homes usually mean working through the roof space and dropping down cavity walls, which is straightforward in timber-framed internal walls but far harder through double brick or rendered blockwork. Multi-storey properties often need a riser path — a cupboard, a wardrobe corner or an existing conduit — to get cabling between floors neatly.
Commercial tenancies bring their own constraints: suspended ceilings and cable trays speed things up, while hard-set ceilings, fire-rated walls, after-hours access windows and building-manager approvals slow them down. We flag all of that in the written quote so the price you are given is the price of the work as it actually needs to be done.

How much does data cabling cost in Brisbane?+
Pricing depends on the number of outlets, the length and difficulty of each run, and whether a patch panel or cabinet is included. Most residential jobs are quoted as a fixed price once we know the layout, and we can often quote small jobs from photos and a phone consult.
Will you need to cut holes in my walls or ceiling?+
In most cases we can fish cables through existing cavities and roof access without cutting. Where an access hole is unavoidable we will tell you before we start. Plaster patching and painting are normally excluded from the quote unless you ask us to include them.
How long does a data cabling job take?+
A couple of extra data points in an accessible home is commonly a half-day job. A full structured cabling install with a patch panel and cabinet is usually one to several days depending on outlet count and site access.
Can you work with my builder or IT provider?+
Yes. We regularly coordinate with builders during the rough-in stage and hand over labelled test results to IT providers so they can configure switches, VLANs and Wi-Fi without guesswork.

Should I choose Cat6 or Cat6A?+
Cat6A supports higher speeds over longer distances and is a better long-term choice for offices and multi-storey installs. Cat6 is fine for short residential runs. We'll recommend the right option on the quote.
Can you install extra data points in an existing home?+
Yes — extra points are one of our most common jobs. If we can access the roof space or wall cavity, most rooms can be reached without visible surface conduit.
Do you install patch panels and racks?+
Yes — we supply and install patch panels, wall-mount and floor-standing communications cabinets, plus tidy cable management.
Do you test the cabling after installation?+
