The NBN box (the connection device on your wall) can usually be moved to a different room. What happens depends on the technology serving the property — FTTP, HFC, FTTC or FTTN — but the internal cabling and equipment inside the home is always the customer's responsibility.
What a relocation actually involves
- Running a new internal cable from the existing entry point to the new location.
- Moving the connection box and any associated internal equipment.
- Terminating the new run neatly and testing the connection.
What stays the same
Your NBN plan and provider do not change. From NBN Co's side of the network it is the same service — only the internal cabling and equipment location moves.
Who is allowed to do the work
Cabling that connects to the telecommunications network must be installed by a registered cabler. Confirm registration with the person attending the job — CoreComms technicians hold current registration.
Common reasons customers relocate
- The box is in a garage or laundry and Wi-Fi doesn't reach the whole home.
- A renovation is moving the study or living area to a different room.
- Furniture layout has changed and the modem is now hard to reach.
Note: Specific work permitted on the external network side is set by NBN Co and the ACMA. If in doubt on any specific case, confirm with the installer on the day.
